Assam/Tezpur: A 20-year-old undergraduate student of Tezpur University was discovered dead inside his hostel room on Wednesday afternoon, with police indicating suicide as the likely cause.
Sonitpur Senior Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha said officers received a call around 1.30 pm and rushed to the campus. The student, enrolled in the fifth semester of the Integrated B.Sc Chemistry programme, was found hanging in his room, which had been locked from inside.
The body was taken to Kanaklata Civil Hospital, where doctors confirmed the death before a postmortem examination was conducted. University Registrar Chandan Goswami identified the deceased as a resident of Nagaon district.
According to officials, the student shared the room with another classmate, who had left for lectures in the morning. On returning, the roommate noticed the door bolted from inside and, after spotting the student through the ventilator, raised an alarm. Police were immediately informed.
Investigators said a diary was recovered from the room, reportedly containing personal notes. However, its contents have not been disclosed as the inquiry continues. “We are examining all aspects of the case. Statements from students and staff will be recorded,” SSP Purkayastha said, adding that the family was notified and the body handed over to them by evening.
The university has announced a condolence meeting on campus on September 17 to pay respects to the student.
