Mizoram Emerges as New Source of Muga Silkworm Seed for Northeast

Guwahati,Assam : Mizoram has taken a significant step in strengthening the northeastern region’s muga silk sector by beginning the supply of muga silkworm seed to neighbouring Assam and Meghalaya from its newly established production facility in Thenzawl.

The first consignment, comprising nearly 27,000 muga silkworms, was dispatched on Wednesday to Narayanpur in Assam and Rompara in Meghalaya. The shipment is intended for further multiplication and distribution among silk rearers in the two states, officials said.

The development highlights Mizoram’s growing role in the sericulture sector. Experts note that rearing muga silkworms during the summer months often becomes difficult in the plains because of rising temperatures. In contrast, Mizoram’s relatively cooler climate provides favourable conditions for maintaining healthy silkworm stocks during that period.

The new production centre at Thenzawl in Serchhip district was set up this year under the Central Silk Board’s muga seed production programme. It is Mizoram’s first facility of its kind and forms part of a wider network of seed production units operating across the Northeast.

According to officials, the Thenzawl farm achieved successful muga silkworm rearing during its initial production cycle in August, paving the way for commercial-scale seed generation. The facility was established following efforts by the state government to expand sericulture activities and reduce dependence on seed supplies from outside the state.

With demand for quality muga seed remaining strong in silk-producing areas of Assam and other northeastern states, local production in Mizoram is expected to improve availability and strengthen the regional supply chain.

Officials said the new unit would not only benefit silk rearers within Mizoram but also enhance the state’s contribution to the growth of the traditional muga silk industry across the Northeast.

This marks an important milestone for Mizoram’s sericulture sector, positioning the state as an emerging contributor to the conservation and expansion of one of India’s most distinctive silk traditions.
