GMCH performs Northeast’s first robotic-assisted cardiac surgeries

Guwahati, Assam: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has achieved a major breakthrough in public healthcare by successfully carrying out robotic-assisted cardiac surgeries, including coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and mitral valve procedures, a first for the Northeast region.

The achievement marks a significant advancement in specialised heart care in Assam, bringing cutting-edge surgical technology to the state’s public healthcare system. Robotic-assisted procedures utilise advanced imaging and precision-controlled instruments, enabling surgeons to perform complex operations through smaller incisions.

Medical experts say the minimally invasive technique can help reduce postoperative pain, minimise surgical trauma and support faster recovery compared to conventional open-heart surgery.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the GMCH medical team on the accomplishment, describing it as an important milestone for the state’s healthcare sector. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the institution’s infrastructure and expanding advanced cardiac care services.

The Chief Minister noted that efforts are underway to further upgrade GMCH with the aim of transforming it into a world-class medical centre. Plans are also being pursued to establish a comprehensive cardiac transplant programme as part of the state’s broader healthcare expansion initiatives.

The introduction of robotic-assisted cardiac surgery is expected to improve access to advanced treatment for patients in Assam and the Northeast, reducing the need to travel outside the region for specialised cardiac procedures.

Healthcare officials believe the development will further enhance GMCH’s role as a leading tertiary care institution and strengthen the availability of advanced medical services in the region.
