Lovlina assures medal, enters Asian Games boxing semifinals

Guwahati, Assam:  Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain secured a medal for India at the Asian Games after defeating South Korea’s Seong Suyeon in the women’s 75kg boxing quarterfinal on Monday.

Competing in her opening bout of the tournament, the Assam boxer produced a commanding performance to register a unanimous 5-0 victory and advance to the semifinals.

The win guarantees Lovlina at least a bronze medal and keeps her in contention for a place in the final. The result also ensures a second consecutive Asian Games medal for the Indian pugilist, who had claimed silver at the previous edition of the continental competition.

Lovlina’s success added to India’s impressive showing in boxing, with Parveen Hooda (65kg), Ankush Panghal (80kg) and Narender Berwal (+90kg) having already secured semifinal berths.

She is now set to face Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova in the semifinals, with a place in the gold-medal bout at stake.
